I was inspired by Ai Weiwei, a contemporary Chinese artist, who was sent to prison for fraud. On his release, he made installations of the prison cells where he had served time. This has inspired me to make prison doors.

I used sheets of 4mm plywood, metal and mixed media to make the doors look original. Firstly, I cut the ply into 600mm x 200mm to represent the door and attached chains ,bolts, and hinges. I made a series of 12 doors to represent the solitary confinement unit within a prison. Onto the doors I painted notorious prisoners faces looking back out at you. I researched the internet to find out who the most notorious prisoners are throughout the world. These included the notorious Kray twins, Charlie Bronson, Pretty Boy Roy Shaw, Al Paccino, Al Capone, Peaky Blinders and Anonymous.
