The Outsider Artist Movement is art from untrained artists, which "exists outside accepted cultural norms, or the realm of “fine art”"(https://rawvision.com/about/what-is-outsider-art) . It is considered to be the development of an understanding of an imaginative way of expression . Research started early in the 20th century when Dr Morganthaler documented art work in an asylum in Switzerland of a patient, Adolf Wolfli, who produced prolific art from his cell. Dr Hans Prinzhorn produced a book in 1922 called “Bildernerei der Geisteskranken” (Artistry of the Mentally Ill) which included the works he collected from various psychiatric patients. This was recognised as a significant book amongst Surrealists and artists from that period( https://rawvision.com/about/what-is-outsider-art).
